Planner/Planning Frustrations - Part One
Perfect Notes & Nuggets
maintaining and renewing
your BETTER over perfect mindset
We all have frustrations with our planners or our planning styles from time to time, don’t we? I think that is a common thing with creative minded people. We tend to get bored or the things that we are doing just aren’t working for us.
I have found over the years that it’s not my planner that’s frustrating me, it’s the outside things going on in my life. It could also be a lack of a system that works for YOU. Once you have a system that genuinely works for you, you can do that in any planner out there.
A system is defined as a set of principles or procedures according to which something is done; an organized scheme or method.
When I found a system that works the way my brain works, I am no longer frustrated with my planner or planning style. Do I get bored? Absolutely. But there’s a difference between bored and frustrated.
Erika and I put out a question on Social Media to see what frustrates others had with their planner or planning. A common theme I saw was that people want to use ALL the things. Girl, I am right there with you. I LOVE it all! And there is nothing wrong with that. Nothing at all.
Frustration: Finding the “perfect” planner
Some people said they are frustrated because they haven’t found the “perfect” planner. We aren’t about perfect over here, we are about BETTER 😉. In all seriousness though, a perfect planner doesn’t exist. Everyone is different in what they need out of a planner and what they want to use it for. Some use multiple planners for specific areas in their life, other’s use just one for everything. It’s very easy to get caught up in the rabbit hole of instagram and see what everyone else has and want to do the same exact thing. I love using Instagram and YouTube as inspiration. I see what someone else is doing and see if that is something that would be useful for me and what I need. Here is where the system comes into play. Once you have a system in place, you can switch planners everyday if you want to. You know what you need to have written down, where it is, what your routine is when it comes to planning so you can transfer whatever information is necessary for you in this season of life. Summer to be a little lighter schedule wise for us, so I don’t necessarily need the same inserts or cover as I do for the school year. I’ve also narrowed down what I REALLY need. I’m doing this in all areas of my life, but more specifically in my planner.
Consistency was another frustration. People not being consistent with using their planner. Again, once you find what works for YOU, you will find that being consistent with it can become easier. Something I also suggest trying out is this: draw out on a blank piece of paper what you want out of a particular insert. Do you need a big 2 page monthly calendar? Google the different sizes for inserts (Personal rings, B6, A5, etc), and draw those dimensions out. Write your appointments and other things you keep on that page, and play with it for a week or two. See if that size is good for you. How does it feel when you hold it? When you write in it? Is there enough space for all of the things you need to write in it?
Once you find the size that works for you, then you can purchase inserts.
We have a functionally beautiful line right here on Better over Perfect.
There’s also the decor part of it. If you need something to be more “pretty planning” for you to come back to it, then do that. Grab some stickers and washi and pretty that baby up! Let's be real. We are apart of the planning community. We love at least a little bit of pretty. The important thing is to not let yourself get caught up in that part of it. That has nothing to do with the planning part. Don’t get me wrong, icon stickers or stickers in general that help things stand out to you, are super helpful with remembering things or even drawing you back to look at it.
Something that I have always needed in any planner I am in, is a 2 page monthly layout, Sunday start. If I have that, I am good to go. I also found that I need a weekly view and daily pages too.
I have been partaking in the OneBookJuly2019 challenge this year. They added in “ The Bullet Journal Method” book by Ryder Carroll. Now this book isn’t all about planning, it’s more of a mindset. I still have my system in place but have added things and look at things differently now from reading this book.
Someone commented that they didn’t think they had that much going on to incorporate this method into their planner. My response? That’s not what it’s about. You don’t have to be “busy” or running around to implement this system and method into this life. I highly recommend you check out some great video’s people are posting about #oneboookjuly2019. Utilizing one single structure and form of planning for one month can be done at any time and is a great tool to use if you are in need of a planning overhaul or a refresh.
Here are a couple to get you started:
